Young Carers
At Bowker Vale Primary School we are committed to identifying and supporting pupils who are Young Carers.
We are really proud to have been awarded the Young Carers in Schools Bronze Award in 2023.
What is a Young Carer?
A Young Carer is someone under the age of 18 who has caring responsibilities for any family member at home.
They may have:
- A serious or long-term illness
- A physical disability
- A mental health problem
- Problems with drugs or alcohol
- A learning disability.
Young Carers may help with tasks and household jobs like:
- Preparing and cooking food
- Helping with personal care and hygiene
- Giving medication
- Communicating on someone's behalf
- Ensuring someone's safety
- Providing emotional support
- Paying bills
If you are a Young Carer, while there are some benefits, doing these tasks may make it harder for you to come to school or affect your ability to focus and concentrate when you are here.
There are adults in school who can help
Mrs Griffin is our Young Carers Senior Leadership Team Lead
Mrs Heald is our Young Carers Champion.
You can speak to them at any time if you have any questions about Young Carers or would like any advice or support. Children can find them in school and wider families can reach either of them via the school office.
